As far as I remember this is an image of 12 photos overlaid in photoshop. I use a D80 too, try using the bracketing feature, since that gives you 3 brackets, you can do it 4 times with a different starting shutter speed and then combine them using Photoshop > Plugins > Merge to HDR.
